Having a coach is all the buzz these days. There are Life Coaches, Wellness Coaches, Business Coaches and more.
A Health Coach is someone who facilitates sustainable healthy behavior by encouraging you to listen to your inner self to identify your values, develop attainable goals and then help you transform those goals into action.
What a Health Coach is not. A Health Coach is not a dietician or nutritionist, unless they have that training along with their coaching training.
According to the Center for Disease Control,
“As a nation, we spent 86% of our nation’s health dollars on the treatment of chronic diseases. These persistent conditions – the nation’s leading causes of death and disability – leave in their wake deaths that could have been prevented, lifelong disability, compromised quality of life, and burgeoning health care costs.”
Most of us know at least one person who suffers from a chronic illness and have witnessed it slowly lead to their inability to enjoy life.
So if these chronic diseases are preventable then why are we not doing more to prevent them?
Great question! This is a gaping hole in our current health care system. Our system is set up to treat sickness, not to prevent sickness. In fact, your doctor may have had only one course in nutrition; yes, you read that right, only ONE nutrition course!
With today’s health care model, you go to see your doctor and they have no more than 5-15 minutes to spend with you. They address the reason you came, diagnosis your illness, and then give you a prescription to treat the issue. As much as the doctor would love to spend more time with you to discuss the changes you need to make to lead a healthier lifestyle, they simply do not have the time (or the training). Our health care system is set up for “sick care” not for “wellness care.”
So do I need a Health Coach?
Imagine having an hour to explore your wellness concerns with a health care professional! Someone who does not dwell on calories, but instead focuses on exploring basic improvements and implementing small gradual changes that can lead to big results. Someone who listens to your concerns and guides you to breakthroughs that will allow you to meet the goals you set for yourself and realize your vision for your life. Someone who will be there to gently keep you on course. Imagine 6 months from now you are living your vision, you feel great, lots of energy, you are doing the things you love, and waking up each day thinking, “It is a great day!”
